Community Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary in Belize is a one-of-a-kind conservation project dedicated to protecting the black howler monkey, known locally as the “baboon.” Located along the Belize River, this sanctuary is home to over 2,000 howler monkeys living in their natural habitat. It is a community-driven effort, where local landowners voluntarily commit to preserving the forest, ensuring a sustainable balance between wildlife conservation and rural life.

What to Expect at the Community Baboon Sanctuary

  • See & Hear the Howler Monkeys: One of the loudest animals in the world, black howler monkeys can be heard from miles away. Watch them swing through the treetops, play with their families, and interact in their natural environment.

  • Guided Nature Walks: Explore lush jungle trails with experienced local guides who share insights into the monkeys’ behaviors, local plants, and traditional medicinal uses of the forest.

  • Wildlife Encounters: Alongside howler monkeys, you might spot iguanas, toucans, and other tropical birds as you walk through the sanctuary.

  • Cultural & Educational Experience: Learn about the local Creole community’s efforts in conservation and their traditional way of life along the Belize River.

  • Photography Opportunities: With dense greenery and diverse wildlife, this sanctuary is a great place for capturing incredible nature shots.

The Journey to the Community Baboon Sanctuary

  • From Belize City: A short 45-minute drive via the Philip Goldson Highway, making it an easy half-day trip.
  • From San Ignacio: Around 1.5 hours, ideal for a nature-filled day trip.
  • From Orange Walk: Approximately 1 hour, making it a great stop for those exploring northern Belize.

Once you arrive, local guides provide a short introduction, after which you embark on a guided nature walk through the sanctuary. The tour is family-friendly and offers a unique chance to experience Belize’s incredible wildlife up close.

Why Visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary?

What makes this sanctuary unique is its community-led conservation approach. Instead of being a traditional wildlife reserve, this sanctuary is made up of private lands owned by locals who voluntarily protect the forest and its wildlife. The project has been a success for over 30 years, proving that people and wildlife can coexist in harmony.

Private Transfer from Belize City (Water Taxi Terminal) to Belmopan

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Our private transfer from Belize City to Belmopan was absolutely smooth and comfortable. Upon arrival at the Water Taxi Terminal, we were warmly greeted.

The vehicle was clean, air-conditioned and very comfortable—an excellent relief after the boat ride. Our driver was not only punctual but also extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He shared interesting insights about Belize, its culture.

The ride itself was relaxed and safe. The driver maintained a smooth pace and drove very professionally, making us feel secure at all times.

Overall, this was the perfect choice for anyone looking for a hassle-free and comfortable transfer from Belize City to Belmopan. I highly recommend this service and would use it again without hesitation!

We went on the Lamanai tour and had an amazing experience! Our driver, Anthony, met us at the ferry and took us to the boat landing. There we boarded our boat and took the river to Lamanai. Our boat captain and tour guide, Brenda, was incredible. Her knowledge about the river, her community, and the Lamanai ruins made our tour so enjoyable. She was able to answer questions and provide us with a deeply enriching experience. After a delicious lunch (stewed chicken, rice and beans, coleslaw, and chips and pico de gallo) and some time at the museum and gift shops, we headed back to the boat landing where our driver awaited to take us back the the ferry. All in all, excellent day!

By far one of the best tour companies in Belize , we opted to book with them not only the AMT caving tour but also the shuttles from bc to San ignassio then San ignassio to Hopkins and then back to BC. We tried other shuttles but came up short either over charging or had sub par vehicle. Nelson maya had safe vehicals and Chris our driver drove very safe.

The staff where always amazing and Jasmine who booked everything was always checking in the night before to let us know we where booked the next day

The ATM cave tour is a must do if you come to Belize and are a adventurous person. I work as a firefighter professionally and on the tour I saw the tour guide was very experienced. He knew how to manage people even when they where either scared or nervous about some of the situations in the cave.

Highly recommend
